Workshop on RAD Strengthening for Fire Prevention

Workshop on RAD Strengthening for Fire Prevention

Indonesia - 18 October, 2023

Ketapang District Government and the Joint Secretariat for Sustainable Natural Resources Management (Sekber PSDA) continue to strengthen collaborative actions to prevent fires and improve peat-landscape governance in Ketapang District, West Kalimantan, especially in the Pawan-Kepulu Peat Hydrological Unit (KHG) and Kepulu-Pesaguan KHG.

The Masterplan for Fire Prevention (Read the article: The launch of Fire Prevention Masterplan in Ketapang District) has been officially launched earlier this year, which was regulated under the Ketapang Regent Regulation (Perbup) No. 48 of 2023. The preparation workshop of the District Action Plan (RAD) was convened on August 23rd, 2023 (Read the article: Dissemination of the District Regulation on Fire Prevention Masterplan).

To ensure that RAD is implemented well and as the first part of the 'monitoring and reflections' series, Ketapang District Government and Sekber PSDA organised a Workshop on RAD Strengthening, on 16 October 2023 held in the office of Ketapang District Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda). The meeting reconfirmed the commitments as well as the collaborative efforts across stakeholders, either as the main implementing agencies or in supporting roles. There are four strategies to be implemented in the KHGs as mandated by Perbup No. 48/2023, and these strategies are elaborated into activities and targeted outputs and outcomes in the RAD. The four strategies as developed in the master plan are (1) strengthening capacities, regulations, and public awareness; (2) improving peat hydrology; (3) land protection and management; and (4) monitoring peatland and restoration infrastructure.

Two NGOs present were Tropenbos Indonesia and Kaleka who are actively working in the two KHGs.

Tropenbos Indonesia has been actively supporting Ketapang District Government and Sekber PSDA in Fire Prevention efforts under the Fire-smart Landscape Governance Program (Our Project: Fire Project).
