Forest Restoration and Rehabilitation Program

Having concern on the widespread deforestation and forest degradation in Kalimantan due to mining, agriculture, plantation and other extractive industries, as well as infrastructure development and settlement, Tropenbos Indonesia has set up collaboration through the signed MoU with ELTI (Environmental Leadership Training Initiative) to improve human resources capacity coming from the government agencies, NGOs, universities, private companies and other related organizations/institutions which have the potential to do the rehabilitation and forest restoration activities.

Trainings and workshops which usually organized in collaboration with Balitek Samboja have been delivered with materials including principles, methods, and strategies of forest rehabilitation and restoration. Participants are also targeted to acquire knowledge, understanding and required skills to plan, execute, maintain, and do the monitoring related to forest rehabilitation and restoration. Those hopefully will lead to stimulate participants to carry out some concrete actions related to forest rehabilitation and restoration programs.

Field visits to several locations which have successful examples of rehabilitation and restoration program complete the training process. Examples of visited sites are the rehabilitation area of mining company PT Singlurus and forest restoration land of Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation. Such visits are aimed to give insights and hands-on experience on successful rehabilitation and restoration projects potential to be implemented by participants in their own areas.
