Indonesia with vast forests and high diversity of forests and ecosystems have greatly contributed to the global carbon cycle. Through forest vegetation, carbon in the form of CO2 from the atmosphere is absorbed and stored as carbon stocks. Reduced forest vegetation increases the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere which contributes to increased carbon emissions and climate change. Therefore, protecting forest cover inside and outside state forest area (APL) is strategic efforts for climate change mitigation.

To understand the dynamics of carbon stocks in the forest ecosystem, ones need to conduct assessment through serial field data collection, processing and analysis who often involve big teamwork either at the field level and in the office.

Among so many guidebooks which have been available (including SNI 7724, 2011), this simple guidebook is particularly aimed for non-academicians, particularly field technical and data base/processing staff.

The advantages of the guidebook are: (a) directly addresses peat and mineral forest ecosystems and enriched with calculation examples; (b) complemented by two case studies, in the Pematang Gadung Peat Swamp Forest, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan, conducted by Tropenbos Indonesia in collaboration with Wetlands International within Green Livelihoods Alliance (GLA); and in mineral soil in the Sungai Lesan Protection Forest, Berau District, East Kalimantan, carried out by Operasi Wallacea Terpadu (OWT) within Tropical Forestry Conservation Act (TFCA) Kalimantan.
