Document 8 presents a checklist of the first inventory made on botanical diversity in secondary forests of Kalimantan. The term 'trees', as mentioned in the title, is interpreted in a broad sense, several characteristic shrub species are also included. All species are recorded by family and genus. Furthermore, scientific and vernacular names, some notes on size, ecology and available herbarium material are included. After the completion of the publication 'Trees of the Balikpapan-Samarinda area, East Kalimantan' (Tropenbos Series 7), a manual focusing on the trees of the secondary forest was considered an urgent necessity for several reasons. The first publication was largely focused on primary forest tree species, while millions of hectares of secondary forest (Belukar) cover most of the eastern parts of East and South Kalimantan. The floristic composition of Belukar significantly differs from primary rain forest with the number of species generally much lower. In consultation with the Wanariset Herbarium in East Kalimantan, the Herbarium Bogoriense in Bogor, Indonesia, and the National Herbarium of the Netherlands, Leiden branch collected data. Data for the different genera were retrieved from literature and herbarium labels.
