Starting in 2022, Tropenbos Indonesia involves in a project called “Kalimantan Forest Project (Kalfor Project)". The KalFor project was developed by the Directorate General of Forestry Planning and Environmental Management, Ministry of Environment and Forestry (PKTL - KLHK) with funding from the United Nations Development Program's Global Environmental Facility (GEF).
The Strengthening Forest Area Planning and Management in Kalimantan (KalFor) is a project designed to back up the Government’s programme to maintain the remaining forests located outside state forest zones in Kalimantan by addressing sustainable management of forest, environment and ecosystem. Based on the authority to manage the forest, there are forests located within the stated forest zone which are known as ‘kawasan hutan’ and forests located outside the state forest area which are called Areal Penggunaan Lain (APL). By the definition, it means that APL is an area for non-forestry sector development such as for plantation, agriculture, settlement, infrastructures, etc.
This project aims to support community business and local entrepreneurs to scale up their businesses as mitigation measures to avoid negative impacts of community livelihood options to biodiversity and ecosystem services including HCV loss, deforestation, and overexploitation of remaining forested areas. Such effort also serves as an adaptation strategy to the negative impacts of the climate change to local community by providing alternative livelihood options that are sustainable from economic, social, and environmental aspects. The grant would be very essential in setting up the community business, which are existing or any potential business that have not been perfectly established. The grant could support community capacity building process, then trained community business could re-start or start the business and follow the competition to get more support.
The focused areas of the project are three villages in Sintang District (Ensaid Panjang Village, Bangun Village, Sungai Buluh Village) and four villages in Ketapang District (Sungai Kuri Village, Riam Bunut Village, Pangkalan Suka Village, Tanjung Pasar Village).
